Jerry, Thanks for checking up on me. I was going to wait until I had something a little more definitive before sending off another
"report from the trenches" but today is actually very appropriate. It was 27 years ago today that I went down in Africa. It seems
like a lifetime ago and it seems like yesterday. Six months of solitary, and 22 months of total time in communist POW camps
were ahead for me. Knob year for keeps. What I learned at The Citadel, the support I felt from a long gray line and promise to
myself--- not to do anything which would dishonor or discredit our heritage, our country, or what we took an oath to
defend--well, all those things kept me alive. Anyone can be broken and I almost was several times. Somehow, I was able to
keep it together just enough to come home without saying or doing things I might ever regret. I thank the Citadel and other folks
for that. The support from all my classmates and friends from school was incredible. This last year and my fight with this cancer
was tough. Maybe not my toughest year but right up there. Again, what The Citadel taught me and the incredible support made
it much easier. The last cancer scans/tests all look good. I take my one-year tests this month and believe they will be negative,
as do my doctors. I have been going to physical therapy and/or the gym 3X week for six months now. I am strong and in the
best physical shape I've been in years. I took and passed a First Class FAA flight physical last month and it (along with 100+
pages of medical documents) has been forwarded to a medical board which will let me know something any day now. The docs
think I'll get it back. My company says they'll find me a new aircraft/client/base. Would like another 5 years or so of flying. We'll
see. Thanks again for checking on me, Jerry. Please forward this as you see fit. Love the website. I'll stay in touch. STAY
FREE,
Rat will be in Charleston with his wife during May 11-14. Bill Thomas is arranging for the trip. As many of us as possible should attempt to meet together as Rat has traveled far to make himself available to us.
